French Buddy Comedy "Intouchables" Will Premiere In NYC In March; Weinsteins Planning May 2012 General Release

Ask and you shall receive :)

After months of rapping about this French film – all the acclaim it’s received in France, and its record-setting box office in that country; and all the debate about its depiction of its lead black male character played by Omar Sy… after all that and more, I’ll FINALLY get a chance to see Intouchables, and right in my backyard too!

The 17th edition of Rendez-Vous with French Cinema, the Film Society of Lincoln Center here in NYC and Unifrance Films’ celebrated annual showcase of the best in contemporary French film, hits screens at The Film Society, the IFC Center and BAMcinématek, from March 1-11. More than two dozen New York premieres will be showcased during the series, including the aforementioned sensation Intouchables.

One of the film’s stars, Francois Cluzet will be in NYC for the event (I was hoping Omar Sy would be, but I believe he’s shooting another film right now).

There are a number of other titles that’ll be included in this Film Society showcase of contemporary French cinema, and I’ll go through them later and highlight any here that need to be.

In the meantime, if you’ve been at all curious about Intouchables as I have, and you live in NYC, here’s your chance to see it first!

I should also add that it’s been officially announced that The Weinstein Company will indeed release the original film stateside (they acquired release and remake rights to it last year). A May 2012 release is planned, likely limited at first. So, even if you miss the NYC screening, you might be able to see it in May.

Let’s see what all the hype and debate over the last year or so has been about this film. Of course, once I see it about a month from now, you can guarantee I’ll share my thoughts here!

And if you need a reminder, trailer below (it’s not subtitled, but I suspect we’ll be getting an English-subtitled trailer soon enough):
