IN THE WORKS: TWC Casts Streep, Roberts To Lead Adaptation of 'August: Osage County'

Coming off a strong year and an even hotter awards season, with “The Artist,” “My Week With Marilyn” and “The Iron Lady” already awarded and still in contention for Oscars, The Weinstein Company (TWC) today confirmed casting for the film adaptation of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and Tony-awarded play, “August: Osage County.”

Academy-Award winning actresses Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts will co-star in the darkly comedic drama about complicated Midwestern family members working through their issues – Streep will play colorful family matriarch Violet Weston, with Roberts starring as her conflicted daughter.

Clearly solid — if not inspired — star casting that will appeal on the awards front in 2013, the film will certainly attract TWC’s core arthouse audience, as well as the actresses’ diverse and multitudinous adult fans. John Wells (“The Company Men”) will direct. “Meryl’s extraordinary body of work made her the only conceivable choice to play Violet,” said Wells. “I’m confident this first-ever collaboration with Meryl and Julia will produce an exciting and moving film.”

“The Iron Lady” has performed well for TWC, with Streep coming off of BAFTA and Golden Globe awards for her role as Margaret Thatcher, while her performance is still up for a Best Actress Oscar nomination. The awards will certainly boost interest and momentum for “Osage” as well. Roberts has recently wrapped “The Normal Heart,” after her turn as the Evil Queen in the Snow White reboot “Mirror, Mirror,” co-starring Lily Collins and due out March 30 in the US. “August: Osage County” shooting is set for this fall.
