Join Indiewire at Lincoln Center to See What Inspired Sundance Breakout 'Martha Marcy May Marlene' and Meet the Filmmakers

If you’re in New York and want to see the film that inspired Sundance breakout “Martha Marcy May Marlene” that made a star out of Elizabeth Olsen, then come to the Film Society of Lincoln Center on Monday, February 20 for a special talk hosted by the Indiewire and The Playlist. “Martha Marcy May Marlene” director/writer Sean Durkin will be on hand to present the short film, “Mary Last Seen,” which preceded his acclaimed feature debut and gave him the impetus to get “Martha Marcy May Marlene” off the ground.

The prequel sheds light on how the cult at the center of “Martha Marcy May Marlene” recruits its members. It follows a young woman who embarks on a road trip with her boyfriend, only to discover that their destination is not what was initially promised.

Last year marked a big one for Durkin and his production company, Borderline Films, which he co-heads alongside filmmakers Josh Mond and Antonio Campos. In addition to having Fox Searchlight acquire “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” the team signed a two-year first-look deal with the distributor. Their 2012 is off to great start with their latest film, “Simon Killer,” picked up by IFC Films out of Sundance.

Durkin will be joined by cinematographer Drew Innis and actress Alexia Rasmussen for an in-person Q&Aafter the screening. Indiewire will also streaming the Q&A live and take questions via Twitter. Follow and use the hashtag #marylastseen on February 20 to participate.

The event is free and open to the public. Seating is on a space available basis. Go here for more details.

“Martha Marcy May Marlene” hits Blu-ray and DVD Tuesday, February 21. Go here to read our interview with Durkin.
