ND/NF 2012 Preview – Hatian Djinn Carrénard’s Guerrilla Triptych “Donoma”

ND/NF 2012 Preview - Hatian Djinn Carrénard's Guerrilla Triptych "Donoma"

I really love the energetic look and feel of this; and the story behind its making makes it even more intriguing to me.

Skimming the list of titles announced yesterday to screen at the New Directors/New Films Festival here in NYC, I came across this one from Haitian-born, Paris based filmmaker Djinn Carrénard titled Donoma.

Described as a “guerrilla film” that cost relatively nothing, the ND/NF sheet says the production budget was rumored to be around just $200; elsewhere, I read that the film was made with the help of volunteer support of many artists.

But the words “guerrilla film” should tell you much of what you need to know.

Edited over the course of several years, Donoma, which is Djinn’s feature debut, interweaves three love stories, chronicling the romantic destinies of three women; “a fresh, funny portrait of an emerging French generation,” says the ND/NF.

It actually premiered at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, but we obviously missed it, because I couldn’t find any writeups on it on the old S&A site. It was eventually released in France last fall – 2011. So a rather long road from its debut on the festival circuit to its official opening. Although it picked up some awards along the way too.

I found several interviews with Djinn, but they’re all in French, so our French-speakers will once again be needed here.

I’ve embedded both the trailer (in French, no subtitles) below, as well as one of the many interviews with Djinn that I found; but suffice it to say that Donoma is a film I’ll be checking out at the ND/NF fest next month here in NYC:

And here’s an interview with Djinn:
