SXSW 2012 Preview - "Brooklyn Castle" (Bobby Fischer... In The Hood)

Scheduled to make its world premiere at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival is Brooklyn Castle, director Katie Dellamaggiore’s documentary, which focuses on an inner-city junior high school (I.S. 318), once deemed one of New York City’s mediocre, where the vast majority of students are from homes living below the poverty level; but it also happens to currently be a school that has the best (the most wins) junior high school chess team in the country.

But now, thanks to recession-inspired public school budget cuts, I.S. 318 finds what has become a school institution/tradition threatened.

The film follows, over the course of a school year, 5 students from the school who are members of the chess team, and documents their challenges and triumphs both on and off the chessboard.

Another film on my short list to see at SXSW this year.
