SXSW 2012 Preview: Doc "Uprising: Hip Hop & The LA Riots" Explores Hip Hop's Connection To Riots

The documentary feature Uprising: Hip Hop & The LA Riots, directed by Mark Ford and produced by Wesley Jones, is making its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival next month. The film explores the influence of Hip Hop in the 80’s and early 90’s, which may have served as a catalyst, to the L.A. riots 20 years ago.

Writer/director Mark Ford (VH1’s Behind The Music, MTV’s Laguna Beach) has previously directed documentaries about NWA, Notorious BIG, and Aerosmith.

Here’s the full synopsis:

20 years after riots ripped through Los Angeles, UPRISING documents how hip hop forecasted – and some say ignited – the worst civil unrest of the 20th century. The film revisits the riots in gripping detail and draws from a diverse collection of voices – the rappers, rioters, victims, police officers, journalists and everyday citizens of South Central Los Angeles. The documentary traces the rise of dissent in Los Angeles in the 80’s and 90’s and explores why citizens chose to rise up violently against police abuse and perceived injustices.

A trailer for this feature has not yet been released; I will definitely post once it becomes available.
