SXSW Announces Lineup of Midnighters and Short Films

The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival unveiled the features to be screened as part of its Midnighters program, as well as a complete list of the short films accepted into the fest.  This year’s SXSW takes place March 9-17 in Austin, Texas.

SXSW’s Midnighters lineup features films that are, in the words of the festival’s senior programmer Jarod Neece, “a bit crazier, gorier, and all-around balls out-ier.”  Directors such as Joe Cornish, Ti West and Eli Roth all had their filmmaking debuts as part of the Midnighters program.  This year’s lineup includes “[REC]3: Genesis,” the third installment in the Spanish horror series about an illness that turns people in violent killing machines; Sundance hit “V/H/S,” which follows a ragtag group hired to break into a house in the country who discover a dead body and some unexpected footage when they arrive; and “The Aggression Scale,” about four hitmen and two teenagers who go to battle over $500,000 in stolen cash.

A full list of the films to premiere at SXSW’s Midnighters this year can be found on the festival’s website, along with a list of the 135 short films that were selected for screening.  SXSW will open on March 9 with the premiere screening of Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s horror film “The Cabin in the Woods.”
