‘The Hunger Games’ Beats ‘Twilight’ in First-Day Ticket Sales

'The Hunger Games' Beats 'Twilight' in First-Day Ticket Sales

Now that Lionsgate, which made “The Hunger Games,” and Summit, which made the “Twilight” movies, are one and the same company, both camps can root for the success of the next young adult book-to-movie franchise in a position to replace “Twilight,” the post-apocalyptic “Hunger Games.” It’s looking like “Hunger Games” might even do better, as the picture  just outsold “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” for first day advance ticket sales, proving that for early bucks all you need is a YA crowd obsessed with your teen fantasy universe.

The “Twilight” installment had previously held the number one spot for first day ticket sales on Fandango until Friday morning.  This is a concrete sign that “The Hunger Games” might outshine the hype and profit surrounding the vampire flicks.

“You hear that?” writes Movieline, “It’s the sound of Lionsgate execs exhaling a month ahead.”

“The Hunger Games,” based on Suzanne Collins’ book series and starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth, premieres March 23. Here’s the trailer.
