Watch: SXSW Hits "The FP" and "Natural Selection" Drop Promising Trailers

Just as the 2012 edition of the SXSW film festival gears up for its March 9 kickoff, trailers for two of last year’s big breakouts — “The FP” and “Natural Selection” — have landed. If nothing else, they demonstrate a festival’s range.

The two-minute plus NSFW spot for “The FP” promises a giddy, deranged time. No surprise really given the premise. Set in a dystopian future, “The FP” centers on two rival gangs feuding over control of Frazier Park (FP, get it?). Their preferred method of battle? Dance-fighting.

“Shamelessly recycling the crass adrenaline rush of 1980s American blockbusters, with references to ‘The Warriors,’ ‘Robocop’ and many others,” Eric Kohn wrote in his review out of SXSW, “‘The FP’ is loud, furious and recklessly funny.” Sure looks it.

“Natural Selection,” winner of seven (you read that right) awards at SXSW, including Grand Jury, Audience and Best Actress, bears no similarities to “The FP” apart from the SXSW distinction. The drama stars Rachael Harris (“The Hangover”) as a devoted Christian housewife thrown for a loop when she discovers that her dying husband has a 23-year-old illegitimate son. Judging by the charming trailer, the crowdpleaser’s success at SXSW seems well earned. As Kohn wrote in his review, “The movie has enough emotional complexity, compelling performances and visual inspiration to make the man behind it [director/writer Robbie Pickering] worthy of attention.”

Both “The FP” and “Natural Selection” open in theaters March 16.
