When “American History X” helmer Tony Kaye handed Adam Kretzman the script to “Attachment,” he said, “This movie will do for Sharon Stone what ‘The Wrestler’ did for Mickey Rourke.”
Not that she’s been at a loss for work; Stone recently had an arc as an Assistant District Attorney on “Law and Order: SVU” and she has a number of film roles in the can, including a supporting turn in “Lovelace” opposite Amanda Seyfried and James Franco. But as of late, the actress hasn’t been offered the kind of roles that shaped her into one of the biggest stars of the ’90s.
Kretzman elaborated to Indiewire, “She is really good for this picture, and the film will be great for her. It’s a good time to let her do her thing.”
The film stars Stone as a married woman who has a one night stand with a college student who becomes obsessed with her and stalks her and her family.
The film’s concept, which Kretzman calls “‘Fatal Attraction’ in reverse,” came from one of its producers, Brad Epstein, who attached Tony Kaye as director, hired the screenwriter to write the film on spec, and got W2 Media on board to finance.
Denham just wrote his first draft a few months ago, and the film is already nearing its production date. As far as the script goes, it’s got a few more rewrites before it’s completely ready. As Kretzman told Indiewire, “These kinds of scripts that are so involved and layered, they take a bit more work. We are talking to tech experts to make sure that the stalking technology we use will be relevant to an audiencew watching it when it’s released two years down the line.”
Speaking of the script by the film’s writer-for-hire, Kretzman added, “I keep track of all the scripts I read. I’ve read 217 scripts in the past six months. Of those, maybe 20 are really good. Of those, there’s only a couple that actually get made. This script is awesome.”
Kretzman says the film has a less-than-$10 million budget, and the team is trying to decide between Los Angeles and Louisiana for the shoot. The film is set in Los Angeles, but the tax incentives in post-Katrina Louisiana are attractive.
The team plans to begin shooting the film in April, and the other leads will be cast in the coming weeks. W2 has been at the European Film Market in Berlin all week negotiating presales of the film.
