Cinedigm Acquires Kirby Dick's Sundance Military Rape Expose 'The Invisible War'

Marking the first acquisition under the new partnership between Cinedigm Entertainment Group and New Video to acquire and distribute independent films theatrically in North America and across multiple on-demand and digital platforms and DVD/Blu-ray, the two companies have jointly acquired North American rights to Kirby Dick’s military rape expose “The Invisible War,” which won the audience award at Sundance for U.S. documentary

Cinedigm will release the film theatrically this summer and fall.

Dick’s powerful documentary exposes the huge personal and social cost of the rape epidemic (according to the “Fiscal Year 2010 Annual Report on Sexual Assault in the Military” issued by the Department of Defense, hundreds of thousands in the last decade, many unreported) in the U.S. military which ruins the lives of countless young talented women who were trying to serve their country.  The film reveals the horrifying truth that a female soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. Dick shows a number of women who have endured assault and tried to put their lives back together, often with little or no support from the military, which has no adequate systems in place to protect these women or try these cases, tending instead to cover them up.

Dick, who directed “This Film Is Not Yet Rated” and “Twist of Faith,” and the producer Amy Ziering (“Outrage,” “Derrida”), are trying to connect the film to much-needed change in the military.

The filmmakers were represented in the negotiation by Orly Ravid of The Film Collaborative and distribution advisor Jonathan Dana.
