Cooking Documentary 'Step Up to the Plate' Goes to Cinema Guild

The Cinema Guild has acquired US distribution rights to Paul Lacoste’s documentary “Step Up to the Plate.” The film centers on renowned father and son chefs, Michel and Sebastien Bras, revealing the secrets behind their best known dishes.

The company plans to open it theatrically this summer, followed by a DVD/VOD release on their SPARK label.

New York, NY — The Cinema Guild announced today the acquisition of all U.S. distribution rights to Paul Lacoste’s extraordinary documentary “Step Up To The Plate” on renowned father and son chefs Michel and Sébastien Bras. The deal was negotiated by Ryan Krivoshey of The Cinema Guild with Caroline Nataf of Jour2fête. “Step Up To The Plate” premiered at the 2012 Berlin Film Festival and will open theatrically this summer followed by a DVD and VOD release on Cinema Guild’s SPARK label.

In 2009, three-Michelin-star French chef Michel Bras decides to hand over his legendary restaurant to his son Sébastien. Having worked with his father for 15 years, Sébastien is ready. But it’s not easy to take over the family business when your father is a world-renowned master in his field. Filmed in the gorgeous Aubrac region in the South of France, home to the Bras family for generations, “Step Up To The Plate” reveals the secrets behind their most extraordinary dishes while observing one of the most closely watched transitions in haute cuisine.

Paul Lacoste has taught film directing for 15 years at ESAV (Ecole Superieure d’Audiovisuel) in Toulouse. At the same time, he has directed shorts and medium-length works of fiction. In 2010, he wrote a play about religion and family, directed it, and adapted it for the cinema under the title “Les Eaux Fortes”. For “Step Up to the Plate,” Paul Lacoste followed Michel and Sébastien Bras for a year, documenting this crucial moment in their lives.

The Cinema Guild is a distributor of independent, documentary and foreign films. Titles released this year include Robbie Pickering’s “Natural Selection,” Bela Tarr’s “The Turin Horse” and Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s “Once Upon a Time in Anatolia.” Still to come in 2012 are Hong Sangsoo’s “The Day He Arrives,” Seungjun Yi’s “Planet of Snail” and Kleber Mendonça Filho’s “Neighboring Sounds.”

SPARK is a new label launched by Cinema Guild dedicated to releasing quality films on the arts, from painting to dance to the culinary arts. Recent DVD releases include the documentaries “Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone” and “The Woman with the Five Elephants.” Upcoming releases include “Patience (After Sebald)” and “Shakespeare High.”
