Rock icon Dave Stewart (the other half of the Eurythmics with Annie Lennox) has been signed by Cinedigm Entertainment Group to bring a series of music documentaries to movie theatres in a recurring time slot. Weapons of Mass Entertainment’s “Dave Stewart Presents” series will feature Stewart and a variety of guests from a slew of musical genres, including rock, pop, country and blues, focusing on the art and process of songwriting.
Though it’s hard to gauge the freshness of the series (it could be plagued by Grammy-itis, congratulating old white male titans of the music industry), the news is notable as another instance of alternative programming on the big screen. Cinedigm describes it as “programming a movie theatre screen like a cable channel but with all the excitement and energy of a concert venue,” and is currently vetting appropriate partners.
Lately alternative programming in theatres has been emerging in various forms. In February, the new startup Tugg launched, which lets the public vote on films they want to see projected on their local movie screens.
