Halle Berry To Star In Brad Anderson's Call Center Thriller 'The Hive'

So has Halle Berry been struck with the Oscar curse, or just been making mostly bad choices? Ever since winning for “Monster’s Ball” a decade ago, she did the franchise thing in “Die Another Day” and the ‘X-Men‘ trilogy of films and between those, she lined up a string of stinkers including “Catwoman,” “Gothika” and “Perfect Strangers.” Her attempted return to Oscar a couple of years ago, “Frankie & Alice,” barely got a release and while “Things We Lost In The Fire” was a brief return to something substantial, this spring she toplines the dreadful looking shark movie “Dark Tide.” So a thriller that takes place in a call center? That’s right up her alley these days it seems.

The actress has signed on to the former Joel Schumacher project (never a good sign) “The Hiveto be directed byThe Machinist” helmer Brad Anderson. Penned by Rich D’Ovidio (“Thir13en Ghosts,” “Exit Wounds“) the film will find Berry playing a 911 call operator who must face her own fears in order to save a teenage girl from a disturbed killer. Hoo boy. Berry was actually attached to this back when Schumacher was going to direct (Halle, get a new agent) and came back aboard once scheduling worked out. Apparently a lot of “top actresses” were chasing the role, but Berry wound up nabbing it and that’s who the producers wanted. Or so the story goes.

Production on this will begin in June. Frankly, we don’t expect much but at least Berry has “Cloud Atlas” on the horizon, one that will let her show off the talents that won her an Oscar, in a variety of roles. As for “The Hive,” we’ll see if it’s worth picking up once it rings into theaters. [Variety]
