Woody Allen is having serial title issues. Remember “Anhedonia”? That was the first title of Allen’s “Annie Hall,” which went on to win the 1977 best picture Oscar. Last year, Allen changed the title of his upcoming Rome comedy from “The Bop Decameron” to “Nero Fiddled.” Well, no one knows what that one means either.
Now the comedy is called “To Rome with Love,” which Sony Pictures Classics will release June 22. Given how “Midnight in Paris,” which won an Oscar for Allen’s screenplay, worked in part as a valentine to one of the world’s top tourist destinations, SPC is banking on putting Rome in the title. Allen has agreed to use this more globally accessible title worldwide.
The writer-director’s latest stars Allen in one of several intertwined narrative romantic adventures. Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penélope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig and Ellen Page also star in the Gravier Productions film produced by Letty Aronson and Stephen Tenenbaum, and financed by the Italian production and distribution company, Medusa Film.
