Trailer for Oren Peli's 'Chernobyl Diaries' Lands, Spews Nuclear Horror; Inspired by Elena's Wild Ride?

Check out the trailer for the “Chernobyl Diaries” below. The film, from an original story by Oren Peli (“Paranormal Activity”) and director Bradley Parker, follows a group of six tourists who hire an “extreme tour” guide to take them to Pripyat, the city where workers at the Chernobyl nuclear reactor once lived. The group explores the ghost town, which has been abandoned since the nuclear disaster twenty-five years ago, or so they thought…

Back in 2004, an eerie photo account by dark-haired “Elena” of her motorcycle ride through the radioactive wasteland ignited the internet. Updated later, the account may have been fictional or staged by Lena Filatova of Kiev; a tour group insisted that the woman attended an official closed car tour some weeks after her posting. Why was it so popular? “It’s a post-apocalyptic adventure story,” responded sci-fi author Bruce Sterling via email. “Very ‘Mad Max.'” Well, Peli and Parker are moving on from there.

Warner Bros. releases the film May 25.
