What to See, What to Skip: New Reviews This Week

This week sees the release of “Bully,” the much hyped documentary that the The Weinstein Company finally decided to release unrated after trying to get the MPAA to change their R-rated tune. Is the film as important as they’ve made it out to be?  Check out our reviews below for a clue. Also opening this week: the first of two Snow White films this year “Mirror Mirror”; lots of CGI monsters in “Wrath of the Titans”; the not-as-dirty-as-it-sounds “Turn Me On, Dammit!”; and the Halle Berry starring nautical thriller “Dark Tide.”

Indiewire: B+
“Bully” contains an immediacy that deepens its message. It’s “not just a film,” as the filmmaker has explained in press notes.

The Playlist: D
The good intentions of everyone involved in making “Bully” don’t matter when the underlying logic to their film is so latently disparaging.

“Dark Tide”

Shadow and Act
The initial setup is good enough; but the filmmaking (writing, acting, direction, editing) just doesn’t deliver.

“The Island President”

The Playlist: A
The intimate scope of “The Island President” actually makes the cause seem more immediate and powerful.

“Mirror Mirror”

The Playlist: C+
For a movie based in the primordial world of fairy tales, “Mirror Mirror” is remarkably forgettable.

Thompson On Hollywood
Visually, it looks like a movie directed by Tarsem Singh (“The Immortals”), but it doesn’t feel like one. The movie will play young. Very young.

“Turn Me On, Dammit!”

Indiewire: B+
Despite the confrontational title, Norwegian coming-of-age movie “Turn me on, dammit!” doesn’t take an abrasive approach.

“Wrath of the Titans”

Leonard Maltin
Without full-blooded characters to drive the story, Wrath of the Titans is just a lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

The Playlist: D+
It seems this has gone from a forgettable movie to a forgettable franchise.
