When Darkness Falls: Between Night and Day debuts at the Mainline Theatre

If you’re in Montreal this week, and you have a penchant for film noir, make sure to visit the Mainline Theatre and check out Between Night and Day.  This is the third play from playwright and director Michael Belcher, a 28-year-old transplant from Maine who now calls Montreal home. When he’s not busy completing an MA in the English Literature program at Concordia University, Belcher—who is equal parts wit and charm—puts his pop sensibilities to good use as co-author of the blog Teablogging.

Between Night and Day takes place in post-WWII California, and follows the story Rose Pierce, a housewife who found relative freedom before her shell-shocked husband returned from overseas. The production juxtaposes the vibrant colours of Rose’s newfound forbidden love with the rigid black-and-white of film noir. Traveling from the confines of domesticity to the prurient shadows of docks and bars, the plot interweaves themes of class, gender, and transgression.

The play will no doubt keep a keen eye on its overall aesthetic. Karen Firth, a costume design student studying at LaSalle College, is providing the cast with all of their period-piece threads. The production’s press release states that Between Night and Day tips “its large-brimmed hat to such classics as Mildred Pierce,  The Lady from Shanghai,  and Hitchcock’s Vertigo.” Furthermore, the plot also involves a hardboiled detective, played by Josh Davidson, who is indisputably a tall glass of water.

So check out Between Night and Day.  Just get there before the last shot is fired.
