Notes From Tribeca's Women's Filmmaker Brunch

Since only women were allowed to attend, Indiewire TV Editor Alison Willmore graciously attended the Women’s Filmmaker Brunch on behalf The Lost Boys. Though we clearly need a few lost girls soon.

With the recently announced Cannes lineup under fire for its lack of female directors, it was a welcome sight to see so many in attendance at the Tribeca Film Festival’s annual Women’s Filmmaker Brunch. As the festival’s cofounder Jane Rosenthal pointed out, Tribeca has consistently featured more women directing films than the national average.

Hosted in the airy penthouse offices of post production house Company 3 and sponsored by Diet Coke, this year’s brunch found established filmmakers like Lucy Walker mingling with up-and-comers like Jenny Deller and groundbreaking model turned Vogue Italia editor-at-large Bethann Hardison, who is working on a documentary about black models and their relationship to the fashion industry. There were also plenty of famous faces in the crowd, including jurors Kim Cattrall, Camilla Belle, Leelee Sobieski and Olivia Wilde.

“The program,” Rosenthal told the crowd, “is for all of you to talk to one another,” to connect and find new possibilities for collaboration in this growing community. She noted that one of the teenage girls participating in the Tribeca Film Institute’s Film Fellows program said to her that the person she most wanted to meet is the legendary editor Thelma Schoonmaker. And from Schoonmaker waved from the back of the crowd — no doubt happy to oblige.
