Stephen King’s ‘The Eyes of the Dragon’ Being Developed as a Syfy Series

Stephen King's 'The Eyes of the Dragon' Being Developed as a Syfy Series

With HBO’s “Game of Thrones” demonstrating there’s a formidable market for high fantasy, the Syfy channel is looking to get in the game with an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1987 “The Eyes of the Dragon.” One of the prolific author’s non-horror ventures, the novel tells the story of an evil magician who plots to destroy a kingdom by imprisoning the heir to the throne as a murderer. Not being nearly as dense and character-packed as George R. R. Martin’s epic saga-in-progress, “The Eyes of the Dragon” is being looked at as a possible film or miniseries.

In addition to the King adaptation, Syfy announced a slew of other projects in development at the network’s upfront presentation yesterday. “Defiance” is the only new scripted project confirmed for 2013 — a cross-platform drama and first-person shooter game (an ambitious is scary combo), the series will star Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Fionnula Flanagan, Mia Kirshner and others as survivors of a war in the near-future trying to rebuild society. Scott Stewart, of “Legion” and “Priest,” will direct.

Among other dramas in development are “Rewind,” a time-travel drama starring Shane McRae, Jennifer Ferrin and “Whale Rider” star Keisha Castle-Hughes; an TV series version of “The Adjustment Bureau”; “Grave Sight,” based on another supernatural mystery series from “True Blood” author Charlaine Harris; and comic book adaptations of “Booster Gold” and “Grey Legion” (which will be titled “Seeing Things.”

Syfy’s also working on a serious amount of unscripted TV, including a “Fan Girl/Fan Boy Project” from the producer of “Jersey Shore.”
