Trying to Load Sony and Amazon Instant Video App for My PlayStation 3

As soon as Amazon and Sony Computer Entertainment announced the launch of the Amazon Instant Video app for PlayStation 3, which means that as an Amazon Prime member I can not only upload to watch on my TV some 120,000 movies and TV shows, but 17,000 movies and TV shows on the PlayStation Network as well. So I ran into the living room to register with Amazon Instant Video via my PS3.

Not so fast.

Unfortunately, my PS3 connects to the Internet via wifi. Lousy slow intermittent wifi, even with a booster (my router is in my office at the other end of the house). So it takes forever to upload a song for Rock Band, for example. I can stream Netflix on the TV, but rarely do so. I prefer to stream video on my computer with its fat speedy cable connection. I’m currently watching the excellent current season of “Justified” that way (my TiVo got rid of them too soon during Oscar season). But who wants to sit in front of a computer when you want to relax?

So I called Time Warner Cable, which is currently trying to sell customers on its “priority access” Signature Home all-in-one system ($240 a month including HBO, Showtime, Cinemax and more). I already have everything they’re offering for far less, so for just $10 more a month my local cable guy is coming over Thursday to upgrade my wifi router and add a cable to my living room hook-up, which will hopefully improve matters.

More details below:

With the Amazon Instant Video app customers will enjoy the following benefits on their PS3 console:

Instant streaming of more than 120,000 TV shows and movies to buy or rent – with 25,000 of those titles in high-definition – that start and resume in just seconds

New smart lists such as Recently Watched, Next Episode and Personal Recommendations

Amazon’s Whispersync to let customers seamlessly switch from one device to another

Your Video Library to access purchases from Amazon Instant Video

In addition, to celebrate today’s launch of the PS3 system app Amazon is offering customers the first episode of more than 100 TV shows for free instant streaming to both Prime and non-Prime customers.
