VODetails: 'Comic Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope'

More and more films premiere on Video on Demand — if they don’t simply bypass a theatrical release altogether. Because VOD reviews are often scarce and hard to find, Criticwire created VODetails, a recurring column to help you figure out whether a new VOD release is worth your hard-earned dollar.  This time we’re looking at “Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope,” a documentary about the geek orgy known as Comic-Con, set a long time ago (2010, can you imagine?!?) in a galaxy far, far away San Diego).

Director: Morgan Spurlock

Cast: Stan Lee, Joss Whedon, Kevin Smith

Official Synopsis: “Have you ever imagined a place where Vulcans and vampires get along? Where wizards and wookies can be themselves? Welcome to Comic-Con San Diego. What started as a fringe comic book convention for 500 fans has grown into the pop culture event of the year that influences every form of entertainment, now attended by over 140,000 strong. ‘Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope’ — a film by Morgan Spurlock, explores this amazing cultural phenomenon by following the lives of five attendees as they descend upon the ultimate geek mecca at San Diego Comic-Con 2010.”

Roger Moore, McClatchy-Tribune:

“A gentle, almost nostalgic look at fanboy- and fangirl-dom.”

Shawn Levy, The Oregonian:

“A breezy romp among the freaks and geeks.”

Eric Kohn, Indiewire

“The movie showcases a strange tension not unlike the experiences of many Con attendees: It’s both in favor of the event and illustrative of its diminishing returns.”

Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times:

“With [Spurlock] present only as a name in the credits, ‘A Fan’s Hope’ is as good as its word in introducing a collection of determined conventiongoers who have come to San Diego in 2010 to pursue their different but connected dreams.”

Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle:

“Spurlock neither conveys the appeal of this world, nor does he ever, for one minute, stand outside the phenomenon and objectively examine it.”

Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope” is now available on VOD, and is playing in select cities.
