Larry David To Star In Improv-Heavy Comedy For Fox Searchlight And 'Superbad' Director Greg Mottola

If you were as taken by “Superbad” helmer Greg Mottola’s coming of age comedy “Adventureland” as we were, you’ve probably been pretty eager to see what else he has in store. While he did helm the slight but entertaining road trip alien comedy “Paul,” he was also tapped to helm the pilot for Aaron Sorkin’s “The Newsroom,” and only yesterday signed up for the promising task of adapting Jeffrey Eugenides’ “The Marriage Plot” for the big screen. Well, now he has another project brewing that will surely have comedy fans champing at the bit.

THR has word that Mottola is in negotiations with Fox Searchlight to helm a currently untitled comedy with “Curb Your Enthusiasm” comedian Larry David in the lead. Best known for creating and starring in the aforementioned HBO series, along with co-creating the seminal NBC sitcom “Seinfeld,” David is now set to work with his former ‘Curb’ and “Seinfeld” colleagues in screenwriters Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel on the script, which is an improv-heavy comedy not unlike David’s current spot on the small screen. The trio also co-wrote “The Dictator” with Sacha Baron Cohen, so they know a thing or two about improv-prone funnymen. Plot details are thin on the ground at the moment (part of us hopes it just involves the director and star competing as to who can do the best Moby impression), but a treatment is in the works, based on an idea David came up with, with the comic also holding down producing duties with Berg, Schaffer and Mandel.

Sounds like it could be a feature film version of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” but perhaps David and Mottola will take this down more structured route than that long-running show. While we weren’t exactly impressed with David’s work in Woody Allen’s recent “Whatever Works” or “The Three Stooges,” he’s done great work on ‘Curb,’ and we’re interested to see what he’s brewing with Mottola and all those involved. More news as it comes in on this one.
