Listen: Kid Cudi Samples 'Attack The Block' For Latest Track "Dennis, Hook Me Up With Some Of That Whiskey"

Rapper Kid Cudi moonlights as an actor every now and then, most recently popping up in a regular role on the (sadly) now-defunct HBO series “How To Make It In America” but it looks like he’s also a keen cinephile, sampling Joe Cornish‘s “Attack The Block” on his latest track, a collaboration with producer Dot da Genius.

The lengthily-titled “Dennis, Hook Me Up With Some Of That Whiskey” opens with a quote from John Boyega‘s Moses (“Kill ’em, kill all dem fings”) before sliding in another one from Alex Esmail‘s Pest about half way through (“That’s an alien bruv, believe it!”). We’re not sure what the significance of it is (other than a cool reference) with a glance over the lyrics providing no further insight. A short clip of Barack Obama crooning Al Green (“Those guys didn’t think I was going to do it…”) is also added for good measure.

It’s not the first time Cudi has turned to the movies for one of his songs: On the title track from the recently released album Teleport 2 Me, Jamie by his band WZRD, they sample the Desire song “Under Your Spell,” which of course hit it big after appearing on the soundtrack for Nicolas Winding Refn‘s “Drive.”

Cudi’s love for movies is sure to bleed into his musical ventures for years to come. On top of these two tracks, he’s already teamed twice with Shia LaBeouf, who put his director hat on for “Maniac” and “Marijuana.” Cudi’s music video for “Pursuit Of Happiness” also featured in the “Eclectic Mix No. 1” collection at last year’s L.A. Film Festival and he’s rumored to be starring in friend Kanye West‘s short thriller that he’s apparently lensing right now in the Middle East.

In the meantime, you can hear both movie-sampling tracks, ‘Dennis, Hook Me Up…’ and “Teleport 2 Me, Jamie” below. [Thompson On Hollywood]
