New On Blu-ray/DVD - Restored Director's Cut Version Of "Ganja & Hess" w/ Several Extras

Totally forgot to mention this in yesterday’s New On Blu-ray entry…

A film that was ahead of its time when it was release in 1973, and, quite frankly, is still very much so today, in 2012; and thus I don’t feel it’s really received the kind of recognition it deserves.

Maybe the rest of the world will eventually catch up.

Sergio already informally announced the upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release of the film; D-day has arrive!

Kino Lorber released the film yesterday, May 8th, on Blu-ray & DVD with extra features.

Bill Gunn’s rarely-screened 1973 erotic thriller that revolutionized the vampire film, Ganja & Hess – a film that is now starting to be recognized as a landmark work of African American cinema.

For many years, what was essentially a bastardized version of the film (created without Gunn’s involvement) was all that was available; but thankfully, Kino has released the film in the original director’s cut, mastered in HD from a 35mm negative.

Special Features will include: The Blood of the Thing” (25 Min.) an interview-based documentary; Audio commentary by producer Chiz Schultz, actress Marlene Clark, cinematographer James Hinton, and composer Sam Waymon; the original screenplay by Bill Gunn; an essay on the making of the film (and subsequent recutting) by David Walker and Tim Lucas; and a photo gallery.

The May 8 release retails for $29.95 (on Blu-ray) and $24.95 (on DVD).

I’ve already ordered my copy.
