'Smash' Will Shed Some of Its Most Annoying Characters

Smash” is going to undergo some much-needed changes in its second season — in March, it was announced that creator Theresa Rebeck was leaving her position as show-runner, with “Gossip Girl” executive producer Josh Safran stepping in to take her place. Christian Borle, who plays Tom, told the LA Times the show is “almost getting rebooted,” and that he thought season two was “actually going to delve more into the process of the creation and what the writing partnership is, the nuts and bolts of that room.”

And now, according to TV Line, the show is shedding some of its most irritating characters, including, yes, the over-the-top Millennial entitlement nightmare Ellis (Jaime Cepero). The assistant who would be a producer was canned in the season finale after he revealed that he was the person who spiked movie star Rebecca’s (Uma Thurman) smoothie with peanuts, to which she’s allergic. While Ellis was so ridiculous a villain he could almost be fun (if he was capable of growing a mustache, he’d definitely twirl it), the show strained credibilty to keep him around.

Also out? Karen’s handsome, cheating wet blanket of a boyfriend Dev (Raza Jaffrey), as well as Julia’s husband Frank (Brian D’Arcy James) and sometimes lover Michael (Will Chase). It’s a good thing the show is also casting three new regular roles, because this has basically left Derek (Jack Davenport) as the only potential love interest for the ladies of the cast. Not that he’d mind.
