Always a major North American presence on the Cannes Croisette, Sony Pictures Classics covers the official selection and market screenings like a blanket. In many ways it’s the unfinished material that tests the mettle of the buyers. Which movies are ready to bid on, sight unseen, off bits of footage and scripts? Each buyer waits as long as possible before making the final decision.
Often it’s about relationships. SPC has a long one with Danish director Susanne Bier (SPC’s foreign Oscar winner “In a Better World”) and has bought all North American rights to Italy-set romantic comedy “Love is All You Need” from Scandinavian sales company, TrustNordisk. “Love Is All You Need” stars Pierce Brosnan, Trine Dyrholm and Paprika Steen.
And SPC ardently believes–unlike their rivals IFC and Magnolia–in the vitality of the theatrical marketplace, as Oscar-winner “Midnight in Paris”‘ long run proves. “We believe that theatrical is the key to success of any movie we buy,” says co-president Tom Bernard.
The film is produced by Sisse Graum Jørgensen and Vibeke Windeløv of Zentropa Entertainments 29 in co-production with Lumiere & Co., Slot Machine, Zentropa International France, Film i Väst, Zentropa International Berlin, Zentropa International Sweden, Danmarks Radio, Sveriges Television, Arte France Cinéma, Network Movie, ZDF, Arte, Longride and with support from The Danish Filminstitute, The Swedish Film Institute, Eurimages, Nordisk Film & TV-Fond, Canal +, Ciné +, RAI Cinema and the MEDIA Programme of the European Union.
