The Film Collaborative Launches 'FestSelects' to Help Distribute LGBT Films Globally

Non-profit independent-film organization The Film Collaborative is launching “FestSelects,” a new initiative to help distribute LGBT films globally in a more cost-effective, efficient manner. The approach will be to focus on those films that have received the most awards and critical acclaim on the festival circuit and have participating distributors share assets and release dates to maximize exposure upon release.

Peccadillo Pictures (UK), Outplay (France), PRO-FUN MEDIA (Germany) and ABC/Cinemien (Benelux/Netherlands) are the first set of distributors that have signed on to the project. The Film Collaborative worked with the quartet earlier this year on the release of Andrew Haigh’s “Weekend,” which won an Emerging Visions award at the SXSW Film Festival in 2011. Sundance Selects opened the film in the U.S.

The goal of FestSelects is to build and maintain “a coordinated transatlantic strategy” for the sale and distribution of chosen titles that will save costs and raise awareness by having the different territories collaborate. (A hoped-for additional benefit will be a decrease in piracy.) Allof the DIY distribution deals will be between the filmmakers/producers and the distribution entity. FestSelects also will utilize DIY digital-distribution service Distrify.

The Film Collaborative recently has provided its services to “The Invisible War,” “Valley of Saints” and “Mosquita y Mari,” among others.
