Weekly Wrap: Interviews, In the Works, Trailer Watch, and Everything Cannes

Weekend Preview this week highlights “Dictator,” “Polisse,” pregnant movie stars and vibrators.

Everything Cannes:

Wes Anderson goes camping with his 1960s-era Cannes opener, “Moonrise Kingdom.”  Our TOH interview with the director is here; he talks “Moonrise Kingdom” and joining the Cannes auteur pantheon.

And from SXSW to Cannes, we have an exclusive clip from Cannes from Adam Leon’s “Gimme the Loot.”  How John Hillcoat’s “Lawless” went indie, which screened Saturday in Cannes.  Audiard’s anti-romance “Rust & Bone” showcases Cotillard.  At the Cannes Market: the deal on the Weinstein Co.’s torrid buying spree‘Emperor,’ the WWII drama with Tommy Lee Jones as General MacArthur is at the market this year,  and the Wachowskis’ “Cloud Atlas” screened for buyers, and Butler, Worthington, and McConaughey got funded for “Thunder Run.”  Elizabeth Banks stars in Alan Balls’ “What’s the Matter with Margie?” and more buys on 70 mm doc “Samsara.”  Meanwhile, James Tobruk and Alec Baldwin run amok at Cannes filming a meta-but-serious documentary on getting funding at the festival.  And to wrap it up, a diary entry from a first-time Cannes attendee.

Other festival news: we have the six things learned at the Maryland Film Festival from indie marketing, to upcoming divine doc.

TOH also featured a trio of Trailers from Hell this week: “The Lair of the White Worm,” a weird and delirious horror flick that still embarrasses Hugh Grant.  “The Devil and Daniel Webster” features the greatest satanic performance of all time.  Brain Trenchard-Smith on  “Daughters of Darkness” here.

In terms of premieres in the web world, filmmaker Rodrigo Garcia (“Albert Nobbs,” “In Treatment”) and producer-director Jon Avnet (“Fried Green Tomatoes,” “Up Close and Personal”) have created a star-powered women-centric web series on YouTube. Our Q&A with the pair – and why the YouTube platform shouldn’t scare you off.

Columns this week: Immersed in Movies previews “Paranorman” in the “Land of Misfit Toys,” Now and Then takes the top ten films of all time.
