Weird Pull Quote Theater: ‘Hysteria’

Weird Pull Quote Theater: 'Hysteria'

And now, it’s time for another installment of Weird Pull Quote Theater!

FromThe Village Voice, Vol. LVII No. 20

Pull Quote: “It’s Jane Austen with a vibrator!”

Author: Rex Reed, New York Observer

Original Quote, in Context: “‘Hysteria’ is Jane Austen with a vibrator — a movie about the invention of the scandalous electro-mechanical device that changed women’s lives forever.

Why It’s Weird: I don’t really need to explain why this is weird, right?

Granted, the small print at the bottom of the ad does explain that this is a “comedy about the birth of the vibrator in Victorian England.” And the quote is basically accurate, although Reed’s original sentence didn’t include an exclamation point (he wasn’t that excited about the vibrator, guys). But, again, I find myself wondering who exactly this movie is being sold to. Who digs Jane Austen novels — except for their distressing lack of sex toys?

Still, this quote could be weirder. The folks in the marketing department restrained themselves by not going with a different potential line from the same Reed review: “Heigh-ho, the dildo!”

This has been another installment of Weird Pull Quote Theater — with a vibrator!
