Debbie Reynolds Will Play Liberace’s Mom in Steven Soderbergh’s HBO Biopic ‘Behind the Candelabra’

Debbie Reynolds Will Play Liberace's Mom in Steven Soderbergh's HBO Biopic 'Behind the Candelabra'

Steven Soderbergh’s incredibly named Liberace biopic “Behind the Candelabra” is adding to its cast — according to Variety, Debbie Reynolds has signed on to play Frances Liberace, “the singer’s imposing but frail mother.”

The “Singin’ in the Rain” star joins Michael Douglas as the flamboyant performer, Matt Damon as his live-in lover Scott Thorson and Dan Aykroyd as his manager Seymour Heller. The screenplay, written by Richard LaGravenese (“The Fisher King”), is based on Thorson’s memoir “My Life With Liberace.”

“Behind the Candelabra” is looking to be another starry project for HBO’s TV movie division, who recently brought Philip Kaufman’s “Hemingway & Gellhorn,” featuring Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen, to Cannes before its broadcast premiere on May 28th. The Soderbergh project was initially developed at Warner Bros., but eventually ended up at HBO thanks in part to executive producer Jerry Weintraub (whose George Bush documentary “41” premieres on the network this Thursday the 14th at 9pm).

The film will premiere on the network but, according to Variety, will also be getting a theatrical release internationally. Production begins this summer.
