“Knuckleball!” has been picked up by FilmBuff and will be released on digital and VOD platforms this September. Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg’s documentary chronicles one of baseball’s rarest and most mysterious pitching techniques. Prior to filmming “Knuckleball” Stern and Sundberg directed such critically acclaimed documentaries as, “The Devil Came on Horseback” and “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work.”
The film follows the sole major league knuckleballers of the 2011 season, Tim Wakefield of the Boston Red Sox and R.A. Dickey, a minor league player with the New York Mets. Ben McGrath of The New Yorker posits that in the entire history of the sport, only 70-80 knuckleball pitchers have ever existed. Depending on the execution of the pitch, knuckleballs are either a batters worst nightmare or smashed into the grandstands.
The two part trailer examines what it’s like to throw or be at the recieving end of a knuckleball. Watch Derek Jeter wiff one.
