Millennium Will Release Lee Daniels' Sweaty 'Paperboy' After All, on October 5

Lee Daniels’ “The Paperboy” made quite a splash at Cannes, yielding a range of reactions, including a 16-minute standing ovation. (See our found poem made from its vividly-worded reviews.) Its 50% Rotten rating caused Indiewire to wonder if it’s So Bad It’s Good. The overheated Southern drama will be judged by a much broader audience when it is released October 5 by Millennium Entertainment. They shopped it at Cannes for outside distributors, but didn’t receive acceptable offers, so they’ll release the erotic thriller themselves.

Daniels states: “I feel so blessed that Millennium will be releasing ‘The Paperboy’ in the U.S. They have been with me since the very beginning of this journey and I know they will make sure this movie gets the best possible exposure.” Nicole Kidman, Matthew McConaughey, John Cusack and Zac Efron’s names will help attract audiences, and the heavily stylized, sweaty romp could find a devoted cult following.

Here’s our look at which stars came out ahead at Cannes (and who should have stayed home.)
