NBC Buys Charlize Theron's Modern-Day Hatfields and McCoys Drama

The History Channel received record ratings for its “Hatfields & McCoys” mini-series — the three parts attracted 13.9, 13.1 and 14.3 million people for their premieres, besting the broadcast networks in a rare cable achievement. Is the lesson to take that family feuds are hot right now, or is it Kevin Costner? Appalachia? Period-appropriate hats?

NBC is betting it’s the former — according to Deadline, the network’s made a deal for a modern-day Hatfields and McCoys drama series project created by John Glenn (the writer of “Eagle Eye”) and produced by Charlize Theron:

The project, which has a significant penalty attached to it, reignites the centuries-old family feud in a contemporary urban setting. The Hatfields have risen to incredible wealth and power, while the McCoys are working-class.

That modern-day setting is really going to cut back on the series’ hat-wearing potential, so who knows how this will go — as Deadline points out, the new show won’t be a traditional Western, though it will likely still have a touch of the genre to it.
