‘Safety Not Guaranteed’ Writing/Directing Duo Derek Connolly & Colin Trevorrow Team For ‘The Ambassador’

'Safety Not Guaranteed' Writing/Directing Duo Derek Connolly & Colin Trevorrow Team For 'The Ambassador'

On paper, an indie comedy about someone who puts an ad in the classifieds, searching for a partner to go time traveling with seems pretty obvious and predictable. But writing and directing team Derek Connolly and Colin Trevorrow delivered something sharp, smart and surprising with “Safety Not Guaranteed.” A low-key charmer that worms its way into your heart, the pair used the set up to explore (with a lot of laughs) the realities we construct for ourselves to make it through life, and what happens when they’re broken. Anyway, it was a great feature debut for the filmmakers, and we’re glad we don’t have to wait long to hear what they’re up to next.

Deadline reports that Connolly and Trevorrow will reunite on “The Ambassador,” a movie that has an even higher concept than “Safety Not Guaranteed.” The duo will write the script that tells the story of a low-level worker at the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs who accidentally makes first contact with a beautiful woman from another world, and risks his job and more when they are threatened from things at home and beyond.

We’re pretty excited that the pair are raising the bar for their next effort and, seeing how deftly they handled both sci-fi and dramatic elements in ‘SNG,’ we have faith they’ll be able to conjure up something special here. Trevorrow already made our list of directors to watch and this next effort should help boost his profile even more. For now, go see “Safety Not Guaranteed.”
