Sundance Channel Gets 'Restless' With British Spy Mini-Series

The Sundance Channel is currently in production on “Rectify,” their first original scripted series all their own, but they’ve also got some promising co-productions in the works. The New Zealand-set Jane Campion mystery series “Top of the Lake,” starring Elisabeth Moss and Holly Hunter, is slated for 2013, and the network announced today that they’re also partnering with BBC One on a two-part espionage mini-series titled “Restless.”

“Restless,” which is set to premiere in December 2012, will star Hayley Atwell (“Captain America”), Rufus Sewell, Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Crawley on “Downton Abbey”), Michael Gambon and Charlotte Rampling in the story of a daughter (Dockery) who discovers that her mother (Rampling) was, as a young Russian woman, recruited as a spy for the British secret service during World War II.

“Restless” is being produced by Hilary Bevan Jones (“State of Play”) and directed by Edward Hall. It’s based on a book and script from William Boyd, author of “A Good Man in Africa” and tasked with writing the next James Bond novel, who in the announcement says that his story “represents the most enticing and alluring of possibilities – not only to tell an enthralling story of wartime espionage, love and betrayal but also to lift the lid on one of the last secrets of the Second World War.”

The Sundance Channel has been the home of a few high-profile international co-productions in the past — Olivier Assayas’ “Carlos” (which won a Golden Globe) and the Emily Watson-starring “Appropriate Adult” (which was nominated for one).
