Tracee Ellis Ross To Serve As ABFF's Ambassador; Festival Will Launch Web Series & TV Show

The American Black Film Festival, which runs from June 20 – 23 in South Beach, FL, has unveiled new details, revealed by ABFF’s founder Jeff Friday via teleconference this afternoon.

To recap, some of the highlights of the festival include the opening night film Beasts of The Southern Wild, A Conversation with Salim & Mara Brock Akil, ABFF Celebrates Think Like A Man with the producers and director of the film, Black Women in Hollywood Panel featuring actresses, casting directors and producers, and the HBO Short Film Competition.

Tracee Ellis Ross will serve as this year’s festival Ambassador; past honorees include Sanaa Lathan and Anthony Mackie.

Mekhi Phifer will serve as Grand Jury president and will present award at the ABFF Winners Circle.

This year’s festival will launch the first Webisode Challenge. According to Friday, the challenge is an initiative to create a platform for digital content. The festival will sneak preview a new Film LIfe TV web series titled The Q&A Show, executive-produced by Friday. The show was created by a young hollywood married couple trying to find a way to work together. Friday described the sketch comedy series as raw and edgy, and one that will “put you in the mind of In Living Color and The Chappelle Show.” The Q&A Show will launch on June 24.

Lastly, the new ABFF TV show titled The ABFF Independent, on Magic Johnson‘s new Aspire Network, will be hosted by Omari Hardwick on June 27th. The show will feature shorts, documentaries and independent feature films, many which have screened at the festival over the years.

The closing night film will be Raising Izzie, directed by Roger Bobb and Starring Rockmond Dunbar and Vanessa Williams on GMC TV Network, one of ABFF’s sponsors.
