Watch Kevin Smith Review 'Rock of Ages' And Make a Surprising Statement on 'Spoilers'

On this week’s episode of “Spoilers,” Kevin Smith and company review “Rock of Ages,” plug “Man Bites Dog” from the Criterion Collection, and talk to troublemaking director Robert Rodriguez about his career as an indie maverick.

This is the first episode where Smith clearly did not enjoy the subject of the main review, and he makes very little effort to defend the film or play devil’s advocate the way he had in previous weeks. If you were wondering if Smith, who has taken critics to task for bashing his movies, particularly lighter fare like “Cop Out,” would automatically praise every movie on “Spoilers” — and especially stick up for unambitious works like “Rock of Ages” — the answer is apparently no.

Even more interesting is a simple but somewhat surprising statement that Smith makes in his introduction to his interview with Rodriguez. “I used to be a filmmaker,” he says, by way of explaining that when was a filmmaker palling around with other filmmakers, Rodriguez was the guy they idolized. A few sentences later he says “I write and edit and direct” in the present tense, and Smith has talked in the past about retiring from filmmaking after his upcoming hockey movie “Hit Somebody,” but it’s still somewhat jarring for him to already refer himself as a former director. You’ll find that speech right at the start of the show’s third segment.

What do you think? Will we all call Smith a “former filmmaker” at some point down the road? What would we call him instead? Creator and host of ‘Spoilers?’ Podcast impresario? Something else?
