CASTING WATCH: Malick Producing Lincoln Youth Biopic with Kruger; Lewis Joins Streep & Roberts in 'August: Osage County'

Roger Moore landed some juicy casting news when interviewing Diane Kruger on “Farewell, My Queen” and “The Host” at Comic-Con. She said she’ll play Sarah Bush Lincoln in (yet another) Abraham Lincoln biopic titled “Green Blade Riding.” None other than Terrence Malick is producing (no writer or director has been named) the project, which focuses on the eventual president’s childhood in Kentucky. “I play his stepmother, the woman who enticed him to read and put him on the journey to becoming a great man, a great thinker and president. It’s a very American role, something very different for me. I have been spending all summer trying to tackle a rural Kentucky accent from the 19th century, so that will be a huge challenge.”

Malick is perhaps the busiest and least heard from director in the business right now. He can also nab the best actors. In addition to his three in-the-works films, “To The Wonder,” “Knight of Cups” and the formerly-titled “Lawless,” he’s also behind stepson Will Wallace’s directorial debut, “Red Wing.”

This would be the third Lincoln film this decade (leaving Malick some space), following genre-mashup “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” (which languished at the box office) and Steven Spielberg biopic “Lincoln,” starring likely Oscar contender Daniel Day Lewis, set for a November 9 release.

Meanwhile, Juliette Lewis is in negotiations to play the youngest daughter, Karen, in “August: Osage County,” based on Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer and Tony award-winning play about a dysfunctional Oklahoma family which is brought back together when the patriarch of the family goes missing. Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts are already attached to bring to life the dark comedy-drama’s love-hate relationships. Several characters are yet to be cast; Chris Cooper is reportedly in talks.

John Wells will direct from Letts’ adaptation.  The Weinsteins are financing and will distribute, presumably with Oscars in their sights. George Clooney and Grant Heslov are producing alongside Jean Doumanian and Steve Traxler.
