‘Cedar Rapids’ Director Miguel Arteta To Run Down The ’47 Rules Of Highly Effective Bank Robbers’

'Cedar Rapids' Director Miguel Arteta To Run Down The '47 Rules Of Highly Effective Bank Robbers'

It has been a while since we’ve heard anything from “Cedar Rapids” helmer Miguel Arteta. After his comedy for Fox Searchlight came and went without much fanfare, he’s largely been working in the television world, helming episodes of “The Big C,” “How To Make It In America,” “American Horror Story,” “Enlightened,” “House Of Lies,” “Nurse Jackieand the pilot for “The Sex & The City” prequel/spinoff “The Carrie Diaries.” But it looks like the helmer is making a return to the feature film game.

Variety reports that Arteta will be taking on an adaptation of Tim Cook‘s crime novel “47 Rules Of Highly Effective Bank Robbers.” Described by producer Richard Gladstein as being in the vein of “True Romance” — and seemingly deviating slightly from the plot of the book — the story follows a pair of lovers who rob their way across the south, avoiding their families, the law, and various underworld types along the way. It’s a pretty thin logline to be sure, and we hope there’s more to it, but Arteta is an inspired choice.

This writer thinks “Youth In Revolt” is somewhat underrated — the first 30 minutes at least are pretty great — and it showed Arteta could do outrageous and comic at the same time. Meanwhile, “Cedar Rapids” also displayed that he could do the character stuff as well.

Arteta is currently eyeing the script rewrite by Ryan Knighton, but no word yet on when this might roll in front of cameras. And let’s hope that this one actually gets made because as Arteta let us know back in 2011, he’s had more than a handful of projects fall apart for various reasons, including promising material like an adaptation of Dave Eggers‘ “You Shall Know Our Velocity,” a remake of Lucas Moodyson‘s “Together,” and more.
