New York, NY —The Cinema Guild announced today the acquisition of U.S. distribution rights to Ra’anan Alexandrowicz’s astonishing multiple-award-winning documentary, “The Law In These Parts,” recipient of the Sundance Film Festival World Cinema Grand Jury Prize.  It will open in New York on November 14, 2012, followed by a national release.
“The Law In These Parts” explores the four-decade-old Israeli military legal system in the Occupied Territories.  Since Israel conquered the territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the 1967 War, the military has imposed thousands of orders and laws, established military courts, sentenced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, enabled half a million Israeli ‘settlers’ to move to the Occupied Territories and developed a system of long-term jurisdiction by an occupying army that is unique in the world. “The Law In These Parts” examines this unprecedented and little-known story through testimonies of the military legal professionals who were the architects of the system and helped run it in its formative years.
“There’s been no shortage of films looking at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but never has there been a film that approached the issue from this unique vantage point,” commented Ryan Krivoshey. “By investigating the legal framework itself and cross-examining its architects, ‘The Law In These Parts’ not only allows for a deeper understanding of the present-day situation; it does so while maintaining the pacing and suspense of an edge-of-your-seat courtroom drama, with enough legal twists and revelations to make John Grisham proud. We are very excited to bring this film to US audiences.”
“Distributing ‘The Law In These Parts’ in the US has two important values for us:  It is naturally important for us to have US audiences better informed about the situation in our country given the high involvement of the US administration in the politics of our region. But there is a second aspect:  The questions that my film carries—questions about what happens to the concepts of Law and Justice when we try make them work in highly political contexts are questions that seem to me to be very relevant to the American public, and therefore we see ‘The Law In These Parts’ as a cautionary tale for our viewers here in the US,” added Ra’anan Alexandrowicz.
“The Law In These Parts” is written and directed by Ra’anan Alexandrowicz, produced by Liran Atzmor and co-produced by B.Z. Goldberg, Laura Poitras and Martin Hagemann.
Ra’anan Alexandrowicz is the writer and director of award-winning films such as the feature “James’ Journey to Jerusalem” (Director’s Fortnight, Cannes 2003, Toronto 2003), and the documentaries “The Inner Tour” (Berlin 2001, Sundance 2001), and “Martin” (Berlin 1999, New Directors, New Films 1999, MoMA permanent collection). Ra’anan’s critically-acclaimed works have been theatrically-released to international audiences and broadcast worldwide.
The deal was negotiated by Ryan Krivoshey of The Cinema Guild with Liran Atzmor, Producer.
The Cinema Guild is a premier distributor of independent, foreign and documentary films. Upcoming releases include Seung-Jun Yi’s “Planet of Snail,” Kleber Mendonca Filho’s “Neighboring Sounds” and Paul Lacoste’s “Step Up To The Plate.”
Previous Cinema Guild releases include Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s “Once Upon a Time in Anatolia,” Bela Tarr’s “The Turin Horse,” Steve James’ “The Interrupters,” Jeff Malmberg’s “Marwencol” and Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Ilisa Barbash’s “Sweetgrass.”
