Exclusive: Broken Social Scene Co-Founder Brendan Canning Scoring Paul Schrader's 'The Canyons'

For his first feature film since 2008’s “Adam Resurrected,” famed screenwriter and director Paul Schrader is drawing on a particularly diverse and unique group of talent for “The Canyons.” Boasting a script penned by Bret Easton Ellis with a cast featuring adult film star James Deen, Lindsay Lohan and up and comers Nolan Funk and Amanda Brook, another intriguing element has been added to the production.

Broken Social Scene co-founder Brendan Canning has been selected to score “The Canyons.” While the musician has found fame and acclaim both as a member of BSS and as a solo artist, he’s no stranger to the movie world. Canning has scored films such as Bruce McDonald‘s “The Tracy Fragments” and “Trigger” as well as “Snow Cake.” And alongside Broken Social Scene, he’s participated on soundtrack work for “Half Nelson”, “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “It’s Kind of a Funny Story.”

“The Canyons” is a contemporary L.A. noir, exploring the dangers of sexual obsession and ambition, both personally and professionally, among a group of young people in their 20s and how one chance meeting connected to the past unravels all of their lives, resulting in deceit, paranoia and ultimately violence. The independent film was partially funded on Kickstarter, is being produced by Braxton Pope, and will roll in front of cameras later this month in Los Angeles.

It’s a great move by both Schrader and Canning. For Schrader, it’s another fresh music angle and distinct choice from a helmer who has worked with everyone from Giorgio Moroder to Philip Glass to Angelo Badalamenti. As for Canning, it’s another strong entry on a film scoring CV that is growing more impressive with each gig. We’re looking forward to seeing what this collaboration brings forth.
