Terry Gilliam Says 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote' Is Postponed Again, Has Another Project Which Will Come First

Let’s keep this quick for the sake of unlucky filmmaker Terry Gilliam, who probably winces every time his long-delayed project “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” is brought up by the ever-curious media. So for the umpteenth time, the status of his on-again, off-again ‘Quixote’ film? We’ll have to keep waiting unfortunately. “It’s off again now. Postponed until next year at least,” Gilliam told The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview.

Curiously enough, asked if ‘Quixote’ will come next Gilliam says he’s got something else up his sleeve, but won’t reveal what that may be. “No [it’s not next], but I’m not going to talk about my next project,” he said. “My wife has noted that as soon as I say something about my next project everyone writes about it and then it disappears. I don’t what that to happen this time, so I’m keeping my mouth shut.”

Asked to drop the tiniest of hints, Gilliam allows its location. “Romania. Let’s just say that I’ve been seen around Bucharest, Romania,” he explained. “That’s it. It used to be that Italy was the best place to make quality films without spending a lot of money. Then, after communism, it was Prague. Then Budapest. Now it’s Bucharest.”

Ok, so Quixote delayed, something in Bucharest possibly coming next. The director’s comments confirm recent reports that Gilliam has been location scouting in Romania. Curiously enough, the original source, the Bromley Times has scrubbed any mention of this report. Perhaps because it originally mentioned that “Little Britain” star David Walliams and Johnny Depp could be involved?

Bleeding Cool copied down some of the report before it was deleted by the Bromley Times. They write. “Apparently, Walliams was begging for a role in Gilliam’s next film. He was warned that he’d have to ‘be willing to work with Johnny Depp and fly to Bucharest where the movie is to be filmed.’ Walliams, of course agreed, even saying that he’d do it for free – which Gilliam ‘gladly accepted.’ “

So Walliams and Depp in Gilliam’s next project? Could it be either the brewing “Mr. Vertigo” or “The Defective Detective“? Did The Bromley Times scrub the information because it was out too soon or because it was incorrect? Walliams is quoted in the piece, so it seems there’s something there. But whether Gilliam, who’s been directing operas and short films, is putting on an entire feature-length effort with these two actors involved remains to be seen at this time. Fingers crossed? More information when we get it.
