Trailer Watch: Ang Lee's 3-D Epic 'Life of Pi' Heads for Oscar

Listening to masters Ang Lee and Martin Scorsese talk about the process of learning how to direct in 3-D was one of the highlights of CinemaCon. They embrace the technology while taking advantage of how it enhances their storytelling; they intellectually gauge how the placement of the camera will impact the audience. As impressive as the “Life of Pi” CInemaCon footage (shot by David Fincher ‘s “Benjamin Button” D.P. Claudio Miranda) was for exhibitors and press, this trailer is visually stunning, especially the effect of a luminescent whale leaping out of the ocean at night. Lee could never have made the film before a CG tiger of this sophistication was possible. (Here’s our Cinemacon coverage.)

Fox, which added clips of “Life of Pi” to its 3-D summer releases “Prometheus” and “Ice Age: Continental Drift,” is giving “Pi” a full-court Oscar push. The movie opens on November 21, pre-Thankgsgiving. It has the right elements: globally popular literary source; heart-warming family story from an A-list Oscar-winning director (“Brokeback Mountain”); epic VFX.
