VODetails: '2 Days in New York'

More and more films premiere on Video on Demand — if they don’t simply bypass a theatrical release altogether. Because VOD reviews are often scarce and hard to find, Criticwire created VODetails, a recurring column to help you figure out whether a new VOD release is worth your hard-earned dollar.  This time we’re looking at “2 Days in New York,” the new film from “Before Sunrise” star Julie Delpy and not the iMovie slideshow of all the pictures from my 2011 summer vacation.

Director: Julie Delpy

Cast: Julie Delpy, Chris Rock, Alexia Landeau, Albert Delpy

Official Synopsis: “Marion and Mingus live cozily—perhaps too cozily—with their cat and two young children from previous relationships. However, when Marion’s jolly father (played by director Delpy’s real-life dad), her oversexed sister, and her sister’s outrageous boyfriend unceremoniously descend upon them for a visit, it initiates two unforgettable days that will test Marion and Mingus’s relationship. With their unwitting racism and sexual frankness, the French triumvirate hilariously has no boundaries or filters…and no person is left unscathed in its wake.

Eric Kohn, Indiewire:

Even when it stumbles, however, ‘2 Days in New York’ retains an airy vibe, reflecting its dogged intention of charming its viewers.

Michał Oleszczyk, The House Next Door:

Delpy has become, to an almost discomfiting extent, a distaff, semi-continental version of Woody Allen at his warmest and most gentrified.

Jordan RaupThe Film Stage:

Rock does more than just his comedic shtick, serving as the composed, reasonable center for the craziness that surrounds him.

John LichmanThe Playlist:

“A sequel not just ready to rely on a past formula for success, but one that builds a rich and believable world for these characters to play in.

Tim RobeyThe Telegraph:

The set-up may feel a bit cheap, but Delpy doesn’t belabour it, plunging us straight into zingy conversational back-and-forths where something crucial is always getting lost in translation.

Jason BaileyDVDTalk:

“If it doesn’t reach the heights of its predecessor, it’s still very good to hear Delpy’s enchanting comic voice again.

2 Days in New York is available on iTunes and VOD tomorrow. It opens in limited release on August 10th.
