The best part of the Emmy nominations? Jimmy Kimmel appearing in his pj’s, speaking truth to power. “This could be just as good at noon, really,” he said at the insane hour of 5:40 AM Pacific time. Kimmel, who will host the awards show on Sept 23., stepped in to announce the nominations with Kerry Washington when Nick Offerman was delayed in the East because of yesterday’s monster storm. And he went straight to an even more cogent point in an interview with GMA after the nominations.
The room that night will be full of people who only care about whether they win, he said: “The Emmy’s should be spelled ME.” Kimmel has a smart way of tweaking the self-important establishment without antagonizing anyone; no Ricky Gervais inflammatory attitude here, but his ideas are just as cutting.
I’m looking forward to Kimmel as host more than finding out who wins; at best the categories seem as haphazard as some gerrymandered Congressional district. (How is American Horror Story a miniseries and not a series in any common-sense way?) But there were some refreshing surprises, because the nominations were not as full of stuffed dinosaurs as they sometimes are.
The edgy Girls was nominated for Best Comedy Series, and Lena Dunham as both actress and director – maybe the most deserving surprise on the list. Louis C.K. was nominated, as actor and director, although his show, Louie, was not. And yay for Merritt Wever’s supporting actress nomination as Zoey in Nurse Jackie.
Even the usual suspects mostly deserved to be there. The list of drama series nominations alone suggests how strong the season has been: Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Homeland and Mad Men! I’m still no Game of Thrones fan, but I wouldn’t argue if any of the others won.
My best guess is that Homeland might break through to win – it’s new, it’s topical – and that Claire Danes will win Actress. Damian Lewis was nominated for Homeland too, but it would be a shock if he upset Jon Hamm or Bryan Cranston.
It’s too much to hope that Kimmel wears pj’s to the Emmys, but here’s the nominations announcement:
