’50/50′ Writer Will Reiser Sells a (Tragi)Comedy Pilot to NBC

'50/50' Writer Will Reiser Sells a (Tragi)Comedy Pilot to NBC

Having nabbed a Spirit Award for best first screenplay earlier this year for his semi-autobiographical “50/50,” Will Reiser is making what’s come to be a common next step into television.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Reiser and his sister Robin have sold a half-hour comedy pilot to NBC. The sitcom, titled “The High Life,” sounds like it will follow in the same vein of tragicomedy as his film. Per EW, it “centers on a newly sober mother and wife who must deal with life’s many stresses — without drinking.”

The Reisers, who are cousins to comedian Paul Reiser, will serve as writers and executive producers of the pilot. Jake Kasdan, JJ Philbin and Willie Mercer will also executive produce.

Like the protagonist of “50/50” played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Will Reiser was diagnosed with cancer in his mid-twenties. Co-star Seth Rogen is real-life friends with Reiser, and the character he plays in the film is an extension of himself. Writing in the LA Times last year, Reiser admitted that “during post-screening Q&A’s, I’ve disappointed viewers, revealing that no, Seth and I didn’t use my cancer to tempt women into bed. And no, I didn’t really fall in love with my therapist (in reality, my therapist was in her 50s — I’m slightly mortified to know what she thinks).”
