With the announcement of Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” opening this year’s New York Film Festival (as a world premiere, no less… that that, TIFF and Venice), I figured I might as well offer up this list of each and every opening night film in the festival’s now 50 year history for any nerds out there. Notably, the selection of ‘Pi’ allows Lee to join Robert Altman, Pedro Almodóvar and François Truffaut as the only directors to have had more than one film chosen to open NYFF (‘The Ice Storm’ did so in 1997).
