Busy Ryan Gosling to Pre-Sell Directorial Debut 'How to Catch a Monster' at TIFF

Heartthrob and meme-inspirer Ryan Gosling is announcing his directorial debut.  Gosling plans to write and direct fantasy noir thriller “How to Catch a Monster,” starring “Mad Men” regular Christina Hendricks. She plays a single mother of two in a surreal future city that is on the decline. When she gets caught in a dark dreamlike underworld, her teenage son finds a secret road leading to a hidden underwater town.

Marc Platt and Adam Siegel will produce the “modern-day fairy tale” through Platt’s eponymous production company (“Wanted”), along with Gosling’s Phantasma Films and Michel Litvak and David Lancaster’s Bold Films. International sales will begin on the film, which starts principal photography in the spring of 2013, at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

“Monster” isn’t the only Gosling project to be a part of this year’s TIFF: the actor also stars with Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes in Derek Cianfrance’s “The Place Beyond the Pines,” which will premiere at the festival.  His other projects for 2013 include “Gangster Squad,” Nicolas Winding Refn’s uber-violent Thai actioner “Only God Forgives” and an untitled Terrence Malick project.
