Casting Watch: Portman's 'Got a Gun' for Fassbender, Farmiga's 'Psycho' Prequel at A&E, Nielson & Bell Join Trier's Nymphos

– While it would seem impossible for the actor to physically accomplish all the roles on his slate, Michael Fassbender is in negotiations to join Natalie Portman in Lynne Ramsay’s “Jane Got a Gun.” Portman is producing the western and will star as a woman whose outlaw husband is being chased by criminal confederates. After he returns home nearly dead from bullet wounds, his wife turns to a former flame (Fassbender) for help in defending her farm. Fassbender has done everything from robot to sex addict, but we’re pretty sure this would be his first cowboy role.

– You never know what you’ll be asked to do on a Lars von Trier set, especially if the title is “Nymphomaniac.” But the director gets great performances.  Joining Trier veterans Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stellan Skarsgard in Germany are Shia “it’ll-be-real-sex” LaBeouf and new cast members Connie Nielson (“Mission to Mars,” “Gladiator”), Jamie Bell (“Billy Elliot,” “Jane Eyre”), plus Danes Nicolas Bro, Jesper Christensen, Jens Albinus, Swede Shanti Roney and German Severin von Hoensbroech.

. Trier plans a two-part theatrical release with both soft and hard core versions. “Lawless” star LaBeouf (who says he took acid on “The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman”) says von Trier scares him: “And I’m only going to work now when I’m terrified.”

– In a stroke of casting genius, Vera Farmiga is set to star in a TV series prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho.” A&E’s “Bates Motel” will examine the disturbed relationship between Norma Louise and Norman Bates, before the events in the classic 1960 film. Universal ordered ten episodes for a 2013 debut, after it was reworked from a miniseries by writer and exec producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin. Now the question is: who will play Farmiga’s son, Norman?
